Regional Nature Park Dune Costiere da Torre Canne a Torre San Leonardo
The regional nature Park “Dune Costiere da Torre Canne a Torre San Leonardo”, in the area of the municipalities of Ostuni and Fasano, covers kilometres of shores, penetrating into the flatland with olive trees.
The starting point for hikes and guided tours is the former train station Fontevecchia, changed into Casa del Park (House of the Park).
Walking along the ancient Trajan Way, you will reach the impressive dolmen of Montalbano, dating back to the 2nd millennium BC.
Besides the dunes, the wetland of Morelli river is characterised by small lakes of salt water and it boasts a plant for organic fish-farming.
The landscape dotted with lame (typical gullies of Puglia), karst phenomena in the Murge area excavated by water inside the calcareous rock, is instead barren and wild.
Moreover, the park has taken up the challenge of sustainable economy. Regina tomato, a Slow Food product, is cultivated by local families, while, at masseria Giummetta, they have brought back the cultivation of durum-wheat of the fine variety Senatore Cappelli.
Walking along the ancient Trajan Way, a narrow country road takes to the dolmen of Montalbano, in the area of Fasano, dating back to the 2nd millennium BC. The last visible sign of the megalithic culture, the “Tavola dei paladini”, was probably a sacrificial altar at whose base funeral rites took place.
