The Sanctuary-Crypt of Santa Maria della Nova
The grotto of karst origin dates back to 1000 AD. Carved out of a lama formation, it’s dedicated to Santa Maria della Nova, on which stands the sanctuary of the same name, considered the most ancient religious building in Ostuni, built in 1560.
The crypt is accessed through two doorways located on either sides of the upper church’s altar. 35m long, the crypt is among the most ancient cave churches, used by the Brazilian monks until the 17th century, when it was turned into a lazaret. The intense sacredness of the place is enhanced by the frescoes, preserved in excellent conditions, of the Deesis, the Crucifixion, the Byzantine Virgin and the Madonna del Latte. Every year, on the first and second Sunday following Easter, takes place the traditional pilgrimage to the sanctuary, during which the faithful pay homage to the Madonna della Buona Novella (Good News).
