The Millenaries’ Cave
By following this nature trail with its fine views of the unique landscape of Agnano in the hills around Ostuni, it is possible – with the help of an expert guide – to reach a naturally-formed cave only recently discovered by a group of researchers and speleologists.
Outside the cave are small pieces of flint and ceramic fragments from Neolithic times as well as what was probably a fireplace, tangible evidence of the first human beings who lived there.
The name “Millenaries’ Cave (Grotta dei Millenari)” alludes both to the association which discovered the place and, more importantly, to the fact that visitors who make it to the top of the trail can look back down from inside this marvellous natural cavern at a whole plain of hundred- and thousand-year-old olive trees stretching from Ostuni towards Fasano.
The cave, which is on private property, can be reached on foot; the walk there and back takes about two hours. Access is only available by booking a guided tour with an expert guide. For further information, see the website of the Associazione Millenari di Puglia.
