The ‘’Lacopagliaro’’ underground oil mill

Cradled by the Piana degli Ulivi, in Ostuni’s countryside, the underground oil mill Lacopagliaro is a true museum of peasant civilization. Of medieval origin, it is made up of several chambers among which the fucagna, a primitive kitchen with the fireplace always lit, the shelter for the animals, the storage and production places fitted with old wooden oil presses and the millstone.  Particularly fascinating are the ancient lodgings of the workers who would work in shifts in these underground spaces from October to June.
